2020-2021

Freshman Year

I began my college career in the Fall of 2020 with lots of excitement and ambition. Although it was an unconventional college experience due to the pandemic, I learned many lessons on how to adapt to unexpected circumstances and make the most of any situation. I lived in the Women In Science and Engineering (WISE) living and learning community which allowed me to connect with other women in STEM. I took courses including Introductory Biology, Critical and Creative Thinking in the Life Sciences, Calculus, Molecular Chemistry, Academic Writing and Research, Introduction to Human Nutrition, and a Humanities and Social Science Scholar Forum.

BIO 181 Lab Report

During my Ecology, Evolution and Biodiversity course, I completed my first lab report. This assignment was significant for me because it taught me about experimentation and scientific writing. I would utilize the techniques in this lab project many more times in my college career. Additionally, my parents have jobs that include sampling crops to determine herbivory damage. Since I was back at home due to the pandemic, I was able to discuss the project with them. Click the icon below to view the full report.

Experimental Design Project

Another major assignment I completed during my BIO 181 course was an experimental design project. This was significant to me because it was the first experiment I created and conducted on my own. I measured how pot size impacts plant growth by growing 10 cotton plants over a 4 week period. Completing this project taught me about time management, thoroughness, and experimental practices.

Food Diary Project

While taking my Introduction to Nutrition course, I completed a food diary project where I kept track of everything I ate for a week. After entering my dietary choices, I was able to see how much of each nutrient I consume. This project and course were extremely significant for me because it was what led me to switch my major to Nutrition Science. I found nutrition interesting and beneficial as I could apply it to my own life. This project helped me realize what steps I could take to better my health.

HIV Presentation

While taking BIO 183: Cellular and Molecular Biology, I participated in a group project focused on a virus. My group decided to research Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1. My group and I met together and researched the history, anatomy, mode of action, effect, and treatment of HIV-1.  We documented our findings in an essay and a presentation. Completing this assignment taught me many lessons about teamwork, research techniques, and public speaking.
