2021-2022

Sophomore Year

During my sophomore year, I began working an on-campus job and got more involved in clubs and activities. I moved into an off-campus apartment with roommates who would become some of my best friends. I also changed my major from Human Biology to Nutrition Science. My interest in a future profession in the medical field grew. During this year, the courses I completed included Quantitative Chemistry, Honors Special Topics in Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies/US Diversity, Introduction to Nutrition Research, Introduction to Statistics, Organic Chemistry I, Introduction to Food Science, and Public Health Nutrition. Comparing Cancer Experiences Interview

During my Spring semester, I took HON 297 on illnesses in literature. During this course, I read several books that recounted first hand experiences with illnesses including breast cancer, stroke, AIDS, and schizophrenia. At the end of the semester, I was given the assignment to interview someone who has dealt with one of the illnesses and compare their experience to that of the author's. I chose to interview a family friend who had breast cancer and compared her account to that of Audre Lorde's in The Cancer Journals. This assignment was extremely intriguing for me because it gave me a new perspective of the challenges faced by patients with breast cancer and furthered my interest in the medical field. Additionally, I learned how to conduct an interview focused on a painful and sensitive subject.

Medical Scribe Certification

Once I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, specifically as a Physician Assistant, I decided to take an online medical scribe course to gain clinical experience. I heard about the idea through the Pre-Physician Assistant club at NC State. The course consisted of learning modules focused on anatomy and physiology, medical ethics, HIPPA regulations, and how to fill out electronic health records. After completion of the course, I passed the certification exam to become an Apprentice Medical Scribe. This experience opened up several opportunities for me to work directly with doctors and interact with patients. Also, this course taught me how to manage my time and stay on track with large amounts of information.
